Latham
Island, Zanzibar, East Africa
|
From 1968 through 1972 I lived and worked in Africa, as
Chief Pilot and Senior Game Warden for the Game Department, of the
Ministry of Agriculture and Tourism, in Tanzania, East Africa. Zanzibar had not been active since the revolution in Zanzibar in the late 50's. This is the first operation
since that the late 50's and took place from Fungu
Kizimkazi (a.k.a. Latham Island), Zanzibar in 1969. The operators were Bill Amdal, 5H3KJ/LA6GF and
myself Garth Hamilton, 5H3LV/VE3EUP (I became VE3HO in 1985)

Garth and
Bill ready to go |

Landing on Fungu Kizimkazi aka Latham Island Zanzibar February 28th 1970 |
Antenna
TA33jr, tent with 20 meter rig on the left and the 15m rig on the right, then the 14AVQ vertical and generators. |
On
the air on 15m with my HW100 and TA33Jr antenna the rig was drying out from a soaking it received getting to the beach in the first landing in the surf. |
The birds in
the background are Masked Indian Ocean Boobies and this is one of there nesting islands. As you can see pretty simple camp and set up. |
The
20m station was Bill's HW101 and SB200 linear with the 14AVQ vertical. |
The wildlife
on the island, the young of the Masked Indian Ocean Boobie were flighless chicks at this point about 2 weeks old and helpless. The place was also full of Hermit crabs and you could not sit
at the operating position bare footed as they would bit you toes. An annoyance from the smaller crabs but quite painful from the bigger ones. |
