He owns and resides on the old homestead of his parents. He has been mayor of the council of East Clifton since 1885 and had been unanimously appointed to the position each year to 1896 when this book was written.

Hollis Alpheus Cairns, mayor of East Clifton, was born in Eaton, January 01 1853. Has held the office of mayor since 1884, and postmaster for over twenty years. A successful farmer. Married 9th July 1884, in Compton to Sarah A Harkness, Issue two children

He was married to Sarah Agnes Harkness (daughter of James Harkness and Mary Jane Marlin) on 9 Jul 1884 in Compton Quebec. Sarah Agnes Harkness ⁽¹⁾ was born in 1861. She died in 1947. Hollis Alpheus Cairns and Sarah Agnes Harkness had the following children:
