Sylvia Ilona Irene (Maunu) Page
Sylvia Ilona Irene, known as Irene, was born on the family's second farm west
and north of Loreburn, 20-27-6-W3rd, on August 5, 1917. She grew up and attended
school in the Dunblane district. In the mid 1930's she moved to Vancouver where
she met Arthur Page from Westward Ho, Alberta.
Arthur Page was born a the General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta on June 23, 1919
as the second son to John (Jack) and Edith Page. His first home was a dairy farm
and milk company located where the Crossroads Motor Hotel now sits. In the spring
of 1920 the family John, Edith, Thomas and Arthur) moved, with horse and wagon,
to the wild frontier of Westward Ho, a small hamlet 65 miles northwest of Calgary.
Shortly after to move both boys became ill with scarlet fever. Unfortunately,
Thomas died. There Arthur grew up as an only child on a small dairy/beef farm
where his closest companions were his dog Spot and his pony Blue.
He reminisced often with me about his life and the many simple wonders he experienced
such as: the native peoples passing through the little Red Deer valley pitching
their teepees on their trek from Rocky Mountain House to Morley, and many hours
riding in the back woods exploring the wild life.
He worked very hard with his father clearing the land of trees, planting and
harvesting their meager crops, and milking their cows. Times were hard in the
1930's and he was forced to leave the farm in 1937. Packing his bag with many
tears he left for Vancouver in hopes of a job. There he started to apprentice
as a welder and when WW2 broke out he was drafted in the army. Because of a childhood
injury he was put on a reserve list and he continued his apprenticeship working
on the dry docks in Vancouver Harbor building and repairing ships for the war.
This is where he met his bride, Irene Maunu.
After a short and loving courtship they were married in Vancouver on September
30, 1944 and a few months later on March 18, 1945, Diane Elizabeth was born.
The war was over, the ships were gone and companies were hiring soldiers just
back from the war and Art was forced to find employment in BC's lumber industry.
He worked hard in the camps spending many lonely months away from his new baby
and beautiful wife. As hard as life was he was asked to send money home for his
ailing mother and to help pay for the farm.
On September 29, 1950 Jacqueline Ilona was born and in the following spring the
decision was made to move to Calgary. Art landed a job with the CPR and worked
for many years as a welder in the Ogden Shops. Later, because of eye problems,
he was transferred to the Alith Shops to work in the maintenance department.
In his spare time my father built a home in Albert Park, a sub-division of Calgary.
After his retirement in 1980 Arthur bought his first new vehicle and then took
Irene on his dream vacation to Great Britain.
In 1991 Irene's health began to fail and she was diagnosed as having Lymphatic
Cancer. One year later she died on June 11, 1992 after a painful struggle with
the disease. Memorial Services were held on June 15, 1992 at Pierson's Funeral
Home in Calgary. The honorary Casket Bearer was her great-grandson Donny Martin.
The Casket Bearers were her grandson Rick Martin, Justin Perschbacher, Donald
Mennear, and Leonard Weiss. In accordance with her wishes, she was cremated and
her ashes were delivered to the Oceanview Cemetery in Burnaby, BC and were buried
beneath her mother's headstone on July 2, 1992.
Four years later, Arthur passed away in his home in Calgary on September 8, 1996.
My father lived a full life, worked hard and provided well for his family. He
gave his daughters strong moral values and lots of love.
