THIRD GENERATION
14. Ester Elanore Maunu
was born on 22 Feb 1916 in Loreburn SK. She died on 11 Aug 1989 in Saskatoon
SK. She was buried on 16 Aug 1989 in Woodlawn Cemetery Saskatoon SK. She was
married to Alfred Onni Hackinen on 12 Dec 1935 in Moose Jaw SK. The following
from Ernest and Terry Mannu
Esther Eleanore (Maunu) Hackinen
Esther Eleanore, affectionately called Nora, was born on February 22, 1916 on
the family's homestead west of Loreburn. Alfred Hackinen (see Alexander Hakkinen
Family History) courted her from the Dunblane district and in the fall of 1935
they went to Moose Jaw to look for work during the winter months and were married
there on December 12, 1935.
In the latter part of the winter they returned to Sander's farm to help with
the spring seeding. One day in March Nora, who was expecting her first child
in about two months went for a walk with Alf and had a bad fall on a snowbank.
That night in the midst of a raging blizzard she went into labour. It was too
stormy to get immediate help so her mother, who was expecting her last child
(Marvin) at the time, and eldest sister, Mildred, comforted her until Dr. Glen
arrived the next morning. Her daughter Delena was born after the doctor arrived
but she died soon after birth.
This was the time of the Great Depression and that summer the crops burned in
the drought so in the fall they found work south of Elbow, Saskatchewan near
Halvorgate. Nora worked in a grocery store while Alf helped in the harvest. Nora's
brother Ernest, her uncle Gideon, and two neighbouring Finns, Art Miller and
Oiva Laukkanen, went with them and found harvest work that paid about 30 dollars
per month.
The next year the drought was worse. Grass for the grazing cattle grew poorly
so the Maunu's hauled hay from the Rock Point area.
In the fall of 1937, Alf and Nora decided to hitchhike to Sicamous to join Alf's
parents. They arrived in a week's time. Alf and his brothers worked for a local
logging camp for a while and the next year they went to Vernon, B.C., to pick
apples for four cents a box or twenty-five cents an hour.
Sander wrote them to return to Saskatchewan to help with farming since the drought
was ending and the crops were better. Alf preferred farming and was eager to
return to Saskatchewan. So with their savings they purchased a car and set out
for home. In the mountains Alf lost control of the car and it plunged down a
steep mountainside. Fortunately, they were not seriously injured and continued
their return by railroad. For the next several years they farmed with Sander
and spent winters in Moose Jaw where Alf worked for Swifts meat packers and later
for Woollen Mills. Their second child, Melvin Warren, was born on April 14, 1941
in Central Butte, Saskatchewan.
In 1945 the P.F.R.A. started surveying and drilling test holes for the South
Saskatchewan River Dam, which was to be located 5-1/2 miles northeast of Sander
Maunu's farm. Alf worked for one of the drilling outfits owned by Jack Mainville.
A second son, Dale Alexander, was born on September 2, 1951 in Outlook, and Dwayne
Alfred was born on March 23, 1953 in Moose Jaw. In the fall of 1953 the family
moved to Dunblane. During these years Alf farmed together with brother-in-law
Ernest Maunu until 1962. Later he rented out his land and worked for the P.F.R.A.,
highway construction crews, and the C.N. Railway. On June 27, 1962 just at the
close of the school year, their youngest son, Dwayne and two of his schoolmates,
drowned near where the Loreburn Ferry used to land on the west bank of the South
Saskatchewan River. He was buried in the Dunblane Finnish Cemetery in a plot
beside the sister he never knew.
Fifteen years later on July 4, 1977 their oldest son Melvin died in Saskatoon
in the University Hospital from kidney failure and resulting complications. He
was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.
Alf and Nora lived in Dunblane for the next several years until August 6, 1989
when they moved to Harry Landa Court in Saskatoon. Suddenly five days later on
August 11, 1989, Nora collapsed in their new home. She was rushed to St. Paul's
Hospital where she died. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon on
August 16, 1989.
Alf lived in Harry Landa Court for the next few years until he suffered a stroke
and had to move to a nursing home where he could get the care he needed. He later
moved to the Porteous Lodge nursing home where he died on November 4, 1999 after
battling pneumonia. He was interned at in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon on November
8, 1999.
Alfred and Nora Hackinen Obituaries
HACKINEN ALFRED
Alfred, age 84, passed away peacefully (on November 4, 1999) at his residence
in Porteous Lodge. Alfred was born on the family homestead near Tichfield, SK
on July 20, 1915. He married Esther Elanore (Nora) Maunu in December 1935. They
had four children, daughter, Delena; and sons, Melvin Warren, Dale Alexander,
and Dwayne Alfred. He was predeceased by Delena who died shortly after birth
in 1936, Dwayne in 1962 and Melvin in 1977; and by his wife, Nora in 1989. In
1937, during the Great Depression and with drought burning the crops in Saskatchewan,
Alfred and Nora hitchhiked from Saskatchewan to British Columbia in hopes of
finding a better life. Alfred worked in the logging camps and then the next year
Alfred and Nora picked apples in the Vernon, BC district. When the rains returned
to Saskatchewan the farm life they had left behind beckoned so they returned
to the Dunblane District. Alfred and Nora farmed for many years near Dunblane,
where they raised their family. During the early years while farming, Alfred
and Nora spent the winter in Moose Jaw where he worked for Swifts meat packers
and later for Woollen Mills. In June 1962, just at the close of the school year,
their youngest child, Dwayne and two of his schoolmates drowned in the South
Saskatchewan River. Dry years and low grain prices made farming difficult in
the 1960s.
Alfred rented out his land and worked for P.F.R.A., highway construction crews
and the CN Railway to support his family. Tragedy struck again for Alfred and
Nora when their eldest son Melvin (Sonny) came down with kidney disease and after
two kidney transplants, passed away in 1977 In Saskatoon. Alfred and Nora remained
in Dunblane until 1989 when they moved to Saskatoon. Only five days after moving
to Saskatoon, Nora passed away. Despite the hardships he faced during his life
and his own failing health, Alfred never complained, was always willing to help
anyone who asked and retained his sense of humor and courage until the last.
He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Surviving are his son, Dale
(Linda); grandchildren, Robbie, Blaine (Heather), Trent, Laura and Dwayne; and
great granddaughters, Allison and Lori.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made to the Saskatchewan Kidney
Foundation. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m.
conducted by Reverend Nora Bergeson at Park Funeral Chapel, 311 Third Avenue
North. Internment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Alfred's family would like
to extend their gratitude and thanks to the staff at Porteous Lodge for their
care and kindness shown to Alfred and his family. Arrangements have been entrusted
to James Wereznak of PARK FUNERAL CHAPEL, 244-2103.
