Lillian Florence (Maunu) Kavanagh

Florence, the second daughter, was born on the family's homestead on March 28, 1912. In 1939, at the age of 27, she moved to Vancouver, B.C. where she met Joe Kavanagh.

Joe was born in Fort Coulonge, a small Quebec community on November 6, 1915. He had four brothers, Francis, Edgar, Fred, and Gerald; and two sisters, Mary and Margaret. As a young boy he used to have a dog sled which he would ride to school. It is said that the well-trained dogs would not move for anyone but Joe. He was also a good swimmer in his youth and loved to swim the Ottawa River in the summers. During the Great Depression he rode the rails to Vancouver where he met Florence. Flo and Joe, as family and friends fondly referred them to, were married in Vancouver on April 12, 1940.

They lived in Vancouver and Joe served in the Air Force during World War II. During the War their first three children were born Carole Elizabeth Lillian on June 15, 1941; Sandra Doreen on October 27, 1942; and Ivan Gerald on January 6, 1944. Their last son, Joel Delwin, was born on March 13, 1947. The family did a lot of camping and later spent summers at nearby Hatzic Resort where they had a summer home. Joe also enjoyed hunting with his friends.

Flo and Joe kept a very warm and welcoming home and when their children were growing up their house was "home" to all their friends, particularly during their teenage years. Joe had his own painting business in Vancouver for twenty-five years and they lived in Vancouver until Joe retired. After his retirement they moved to Hatzic where Florence passed away on March 8, 1975 at the age of 65 years.
After her death, Joe met and married Rae. They had a home in Mission, B.C., which Joe renovated and expanded a number of times to keep busy through the retirement years. They had eleven years together before Joe died suddenly at their home on November 24, 1989. He was buried next to Florence in the nearby Hatzic Cemetery on November 30, 1989.
