Arvid (Arviti) Maunu Family
Arvid Maunu was born on August 27, 1887 in Estelline, South Dakota. In 1905 he
and his older brother Sander emigrated to Canada and homesteaded E 2-27-6 W3rd
in the Loreburn district of Saskatchewan. In 1911 he married Mary Hilda Salminen
who was born in Saarijarvi, Finland on May 1, 1894. She emigrated from there
to the Loreburn district in 1910. On April 8, 1913 he filed his second homestead
on the west side of the South Saskatchewan River, SW 34-25-8 W3rd, 8 miles west
and south of Dunblane (7-1/2 miles north/west of Birsay).
A few years later he sold his land to Hjalmar Hauta and bought E 13-26-8 W3rd,
land originally homesteaded by Ole Wuonala in June 1909. He farmed this land
until the family moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1935.
They had four children, Eva, Arvid Jr. born on September 12, 1913, Esther, and
Helvi.
In 1925 Arvid rented out his land and the family moved to Dunblane. With a team
of horses he hauled rock to flatcars in Dunblane, which were then shunted to
the site of the Elbow Bridge under construction at the time.
In the spring of 1926, the family moved to Mayger, Oregon where he purchased
a cherry orchard. But the crops did not bring enough money to sustain the family
so they moved back to Dunblane in August 1927. The next spring they moved back
to the farm in Saskatchewan. The crops were good that year and the price of grain
was high.
Unfortunately, the next few years saw the price of grain drop and the beginning
of the drought set in. In the spring of 1935 Arvid decided to move to Port Arthur
and he left his brother John to look after the farm.
Based on "Arvid Maunu Sr. and Family" by Arvid Maunu Jr. as it appeared
in Echoes of Coteau with additional information by Ernest Maunu and Terry Maunu.
