The following from Ernest and Terry Mannu.
Gideon Maunu
Gideon was the sixth child born to Jaakko and Karoliina Maunu. In 1910 when he
was about 15 years old he emigrated with his parents to the Loreburn district
of Saskatchewan. On August 5, 1912 he filed his own homestead at NW 18-26-7 W3rd
on the West side of the South Saskatchewan River. It was situated 3-1/2 miles
west of Dunblane on the west bank of the CNR Dam Reservoir, which had been built
to provide a constant supply of water by underground pipeline to the CNR roundhouse
in Dunblane.
"Paksi" - The White Finn Hall
In 1914 a group of "Red" Finns with a socialistic inclination who ran
the Lake Coteau Social Organization, built the East Finn Hall located on Kotila's
land (SW 14-26-8 W3rd) 4 miles west of Dunblane. In 1915 some of their neighbouring
Finns who were opposed to the socialistic preaching of the "Reds" created
their own social organization. They decided to build their own community hall.
Gideon Maunu built the hall on his land where it operated as the "White"
Finn hall for a few years. The Finns called the hall "paksi", the "box".
Gideon's nephew, Ernest Maunu, recalls as a youngster seeing his first silent
movie, "Uncle Tom's Cabin", in that hall. He was too young to read
the English subtitles so his mother read them and explained the movie to him.
The generator that powered the projector was driven by a belt run from the jacked-up
rear drive wheel of a Model-T Ford. He remembers that, since the Model T had
no water pump and the coolant circulated within the engine by gravity and siphon
action, it would often overheat and stop thus disrupting the movie. The hall
was later moved to a new location on Hudson Bay Company land, NW 8-26-7 W3rd,
south of Simon Rapakko's homestead, 2-1/2 miles west of Dunblane.
The number of Finn's to support this hall was limited and the organization could
not keep it going. Gideon's oldest brother Sander decided to purchase the hall
and move it to Dunblane to serve the community at large. In the winter of 1921
they sawed it in half by hand, and with two teams of four horses, moved the hall
in sections on sleighs to its final location in Dunblane (lot 3 block 2) on Main
Street. They added a front extension to the hall containing a front entrance
and cloakroom, with a projection room and apartment upstairs. Sander and Reimari
Jussi (John Ray) jointly owned the hall until 1925 when Sander sold his share
to Reimari for $1000 and from that time on the hall was referred to as "John
Ray's Hall". John Ray lived in the small apartment upstairs. The hall served
the Town of Dunblane and surrounding rural area as a popular dance and community
hall through the "boom" years which lasted until the early 1940's,
and then again from 1959 to 1969 when the Gardiner Dam was built. In the years
of decline that followed, it was used very little and in 1980 a grass fire, started
by a fallen electrical line, engulfed the hall and it burned to the ground.
Later Gideon moved into Dunblane where he lived until his death in 1954.
