Dear Julie
-
In the family bible I found the following:-
births born
Eva Melinda Mayo 1864
Hattie Maria Hamilton 1870
Hugh Edward Hamilton Oct 20 1871 (your grandfather)
Francis S.J. Hamilton 1873
Lelia Rose Hamilton 1875 - died 1887
Justin William Hamilton 1877
-
Father Matthew Hamilton born 1843.
1st wife Irene Mayo 1869 wedding date
(Irene Isabell Pierce) born 1842
We are not sure if he had two wives called Irene or he married an Irene who had
been married before. I think that it was perhaps two women because of the gap
in the births of six years. (we now know that Irene was married to E.R. Mayo
and had one child Eva before marrying Matthew - this note added by Garth, Phyllis's
son).

Justin lived in Unity SK until he died and had two daughters, Rose who died several

Can't tell you any more details re your grandfathers brothers and sisters. I've
met Justin, Ella, Frank but years ago when first married, in Unity SK. If you
wrote to jack Wallace box 249, Unity SK. he can tell your more perhaps he can
tell about Justin's family and Frank's. The Mass. (Bernardston) arm of the family
we met but weren't much interested in so distant a connection to keep up correspondence.
I enclosed two pieces of memorabilia you might be interested in. Your dad was
the first child he was probably born in Sydney MB. I think those are all the
details I have let us know ahead when & where you will be in Toronto in July
we can come in to see you. I recall years ago meeting your Dad in Toronto and
having lunch with him. Yes our kids are just realizing they know very little
of their roots! I'm not great on ancestors!
love Phyllis Hugh Edward Hamilton was born on 20 Oct
1871 in East Clifton Quebec. He died on 27 Feb 1942 in 193 5th Ave., Unity Sask.
He was buried in Pleasantview Cemetary, Unity Sask.. Hugh was born in East
Clifton Quebec and grew up here. He became a school teacher and in 1904 was teaching
school in Sydney Manitoba where he met his wife who was also a school teacher.
There first son Lyle was born here. In 1910 he moved his family to Unity Saskatchewan
to teach school. Here he started a farm implement, car dealership, and gas station,
at the corner of Fourth and Main Streets in Unity which he ran until his death
in 1941. We have a calendar from 1935 which shows him to be a Pontiac Dealer
at that time. He also at one time sold Durant Star automobiles as well as Dodge.
John Deer Farm Equipment and Gulf - Frontenac gas rounded out the franchises.
I do not know the time line for the auto franchises except that my mother always
talked about Dodge and dad always drove a Chrysler product. So sometime after
1935 the franchise changed to Dodge. The Calendar was sent to me by Don Wallace
a cousin still living in Unity in 1999. he said a friend found it in a antique
shop in Saskatoon and purchased for 25 cents and they sent it to me in May of
1999. The dealer ship was located at 301 Main St. at third Ave. in Unity Sask.
Fanny Louisa Carr and Hugh Edward Hamilton had the following children:
+15 i.
Lyle Armstrong Hamilton.
+16 ii.
Dr Ronald Edward Hamilton. |
